The 20m rope is what you get when shibari becomes a regular practice and no longer just a fantasy — you'll feel the difference from the 10m as soon as you try your first complex figure. Learn to handle the length before you start on your partner: practice on a cushion or on yourself, otherwise you'll spend more time untangling than tying. The black cotton holds up well over time if you store it properly after each use.

Twenty meters of black cotton — the reference length for shibari practitioners who tie complex figures without having to splice two ropes. The format for full body ties with multiple branches.

The double format for advanced figures

10m covers basic harnesses; 20m allows you to go further without interruption. A complete karada with branches on the arms and thighs, a takate kote (arms tied behind the back with chest harness), an agura (crossed legs held) — all these figures require a continuous length that a short rope cannot cover.

Braided cotton for durability

Braided cotton holds up well over time if you coil it correctly after each use (daisy chain technique to avoid unwanted knots). With regular use, a 20m rope wears out more slowly than a 10m rope used twice for the same figures. It is also a more durable investment for someone who practices beyond curiosity.

Managing length — the bight technique

With 20m of rope, you don't start from the end — you fold it in half to have 10m on each side (the 'bight' in the center). This standard shibari technique allows you to work symmetrically without pulling the entire rope with each movement. If you practice seriously, this is a learning process that transforms the practice. Take it out for an entire scene where your partner will spend an hour tied up: you build the tie layer by layer, without interruption.
